One thing many people remember about Josh is that he loved to compete. Regardless of the activity, Josh’s competitive nature shined through. To keep that competitive spirit going, this entire event is based around a series of tournaments and activities to allow all people the opportunity to share in the special weekend.
Before we get into the tournaments, it’s important for us to explain how this event came to fruition. After saying final goodbyes to our friend and offering condolences to Josh’s family, a group of grieving friends gathered and felt an undying urge to do something to remember and honor Josh. We had several discussions after that day, and in August of 2012, the Josh Pelton Memorial began. What started as a basic softball tournament has turned into so much more today!
Since day one we have ran a 16-team, double elimination softball tournament open to all people at any skill level. We have tried to keep the teams as local as possible as they were the people who truly knew Josh. This is a cash tournament with the top 4 teams winning a share of the prize money.
In 2015 we decided that having a softball tournament was great, but the goal was to get as many people involved in the fun weekend as possible, so we decided to add a coed grass volleyball tournament to the weekend. The tournament takes place during the day on Saturday with multiple courts playing at the same time. This tournament is played for fun for all skill levels.
New in 2017. Who doesn’t love yard games? From the young kids tossing bags to adults playing a game at a get-together, corn hole has been a staple at many summertime gatherings. This tournament will take place on Saturday beginning late morning and running until dark depending on the number of teams registered.
New in 2017. When we say we want everyone involved, we mean it! Maybe sports isn’t your thing or you’re not the competitive type. That’s fine – we wanted to add something for you too! The JDP Memorial 5k will be a road run/walk that begins and ends at Central Park. The course travels the beautiful streets of Milton and also takes a quick stroll around Schilberg Park. This run/walk is open to any and all levels of participants looking to get their cardio on to support a good cause!
As you can now see there are many components to the weekend that hopefully allow everyone the opportunity to support while doing something they enjoy. Everyone is able to participate in as many events/tournaments as they would like; however, due to the number of activities we will not postpone, adjust or change start times for anyone participating in another event for any reason. By staggering event start times, we have tried to do the best we can to allow you the ability to enjoy as many activities as possible.
